Driving to Peg-y-Don

There are lots of options when driving to Peg-y-Don. What do we recommend?

We are often asked the best way to drive to Peg-y-Don.

The simple answer is to use the sat nav of your choice to direct you to the address: Peg-y-Don, Newport Links Golf Club, Golf Course Road, Newport, Pembrokeshire, SA42 0NR. If you use Google Maps, just search for Peg-y-Don and it will guide you to the house. If you are a what3words person, you can find the house using ///thrilled.swimsuits.translate, which seems fairly apt given our beachside location 🙂

The longer answer is *slightly* more complicated. We personally do not follow the typical sat nav guidance as it tends to route you via the shortest possible distance, which can involve a lot of very small lanes once past Carmarthen. Whilst I am sure it is a shorter distance, the reality of driving on small lanes across the countryside can involve getting stuck behind tractors so I am not convinced that it is always the quickest option.

There is also the choice between easy, straight roads or winding your way through the (admittedly very beautiful) countryside. Speaking from personal experience, the endless bends can also lead to vomiting children in the back of the car so we tend to stick to straighter roads (it was a long drive home…).

It will obviously depend on where you are coming from, but a lot of journeys will involve the M4. Our general approach is to drive all the way until the end of the M4, then the A48, then the A40, then the A478 which cuts across to the A487, which takes you to Newport. This map picks up the journey from the Pont Abraham Services, which are right at the very end of the M4:

It takes around 1.5 hours to get to Peg-y-Don from the end of the M4. You should be able to see this route here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RkRpRUrnKty1XRRt6

It is the cutting across to the A487 which generates the most debate, as there are lots of options. As a general rule, most sat navs will tend to try to get you to cut across fairly early after Carmarthen.

Each to their own, but this is the route that we have settled on over the years, which involves staying on the A40 for quite a bit longer than the sat navs will suggest and turning right on to the A478 near Narbeth:

This route is very easy and hold-ups are rare (in our experience). Again, most sat navs will tell you to turn left in Crymych and weave your way through to the B4332 but we tend to stick to the A478 and turn left on to the B4332 shortly after driving through Crymych.

The final stretch involves crossing over the River Nevern – here is a quick fly-by of the journey to Peg-y-Don from Newport:

We hope that helps. It is a really easy journey and this post probably makes it sound a lot more complicated than it is, but we wanted to share our particular route as there really are lots of choices. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are travelling to Newport and have any questions.
