Newport in the Autumn

From colourful coastal walks to cosy pubs and golden sunsets, discover the beauty of Newport in the Autumn.

Firstly, we are sorry for a bit of a lull with our blog posts – we did originally say that the blog would be ‘fairly sporadic’, but life has got in the way a bit this year and we haven’t been in Newport as much as we would have liked, thanks in part to a very busy time with bookings.

Along with a bit of a site refresh, we wanted to get back to writing blog posts and thought that the timing is right to share some thoughts on why we think that Newport is especially glorious in the Autumn months. We have written before about why you should consider Newport in the winter but Autumn should definitely be on your hit list.

There’s something undeniably special about Pembrokeshire in the Autumn. Whilst Newport is never swamped in the way that Cornwall is, even during the summer school holidays, the coastline takes on a quieter, more reflective beauty as the days shorten. Around Newport, the landscape shifts from bright greens and blues to a tapestry of golds, russets and copper – a painter’s dream and a walker’s paradise.

Autumnal vibes

Autumn in Newport offers a gentler rhythm. The air is cooler and crisp, the sea is often astonishingly clear and the hillsides glow with burnt orange bracken and red berries.

There is something really special about the light at this time of year. The lower sun casts long shadows over the estuary and, on calm evenings, the reflections across the Nevern River are nothing short of magical.

If you are out and about, you will hear the curlews calling across the estuary and, whilst we are still waiting for this particular treat, it is not unusual to see Otters playing in the shallows.

What we have found to be more reliable are seal pups, which are a common sight at this time of the year. Last year, one was on the beach for a few days but was thankfully rescued by its mum who had obviously been fishing. Whilst it is tempting to have a closer look, it is important to give the pups some space, especially if you have dogs with you. The mothers do apparently leave them on the beaches deliberately, but typically choose more secluded bays than the mighty Newport Sands.

Stunning coastal walks

The Autumn is arguably the best time to go walking in Pembrokeshire. It is typically still mild enough for long days outdoors but it is obviously a bit cooler, so you can stride out without melting.

You really are spoilt for choice when looking for walks around Newport, but here are our top three routes that showcase the best of both coast and countryside:

  • Newport Sands to Cwm-yr-Eglwys:
A classic section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, offering dramatic cliff-top views across to Dinas Head. If you are feeling more adventurous, you can keep going and complete the loop around Dinas Head itself, probably stopping off for a coffee / pint at Sailors’ Safety in Pwllgwaelod…
  • Nevern Valley Walk:
This is one of our favourites – enjoy the peaceful inland trail following the River Nevern through ancient woodland. In Autumn, the canopy blazes with colour, and the carpet of fallen leaves makes for a satisfying crunch underfoot. We will walk this trail next time we are in Newport and share the route.
  • Mynydd Carningli (The Mountain of Angels):
For those craving elevation, this is another favourite which rewards you with sweeping views of Cardigan Bay and the Preseli Hills. On clear days, you can see all the way to Snowdonia. Have a read of our Carningli walk post for a suggested route to follow from Peg-y-Don.

These are just three routes (of many around Newport) which offer a different perspective on the season – from coastal drama to woodland calm – and all are within easy reach of the house.

Pit stops in Newport

After a brisk autumn walk, Newport provides plenty of cosy spots to refuel and warm up. The local pubs and cafés come into their own at this time of year – log fires, local ales and hearty Pembrokeshire produce on the menu.

The only real downside to Autumn is that you may be unlucky and find that the kitchen is closed as the staff take a well-earned break after the summer. We experienced this ourselves when we were in Newport last week and could not do our long overdue review of the excellent Castle Inn as the kitchen was closed for the week. We have been trying to write up a review of The Castle for ages, but the stars have not yet aligned. Watch this space…

In the meantime, you may want to read our reviews of some of our other favourite Newport eateries including The Golden Lion, Blas at Fronlas, The Canteen and the Cat Rock Cafe, which is literally on your doorstep when staying at Peg-y-Don.

A photographer’s dream

For photographers, autumn in Pembrokeshire is pure inspiration.

Early morning mist over the Nevern estuary, golden hour on the beach and the contrast of fiery foliage against grey stone cottages all combine to create stunning images. Even a simple stroll along the Parrog slipway can yield postcard-worthy shots.

We are by no means photographers ourselves, but here are a few shots (only on a phone) from our stay last week, which give you a flavour of what you can expect:

With a proper camera, you really can capture some stunning photographs at this time of year.

The advantages of visiting Newport in Autumn

We hope that this post shows how fantastic Newport can be in the Autumn. As the pace slows, it is easier to find accommodation (although you know that you really want to stay at Peg-y-Don) and there is a glorious sense of calm that can be missing in the summer high season.

For anyone who loves walking, photography, wildlife, or simply reconnecting with nature, we would highly recommedn a trip to Newport. The weather may be unpredictable, but that’s part of the charm – dramatic skies and bursts of sunshine often make for the most memorable days.

So pack your walking boots, bring a waterproof just in case, and experience the magic of autumn colours and coastal walks in Newport, Pembrokeshire. You might just find it’s your favourite season of all.
