The start of July marks the end of Peg-y-Don’s first two months of existence. We thought that it would be a good time to look back over what we have learned since launching in early May.
Being honest, we didn’t really know what to expect as we have no prior experience as owners of a holiday let property. We have enjoyed being guests at holiday lets across the UK, but hosting is a new venture for us. We have no plans to build a holiday let empire. Peg-y-Don is first and foremost our little corner of heaven rather than a business.
We want to share the house with like minded people, so that you can enjoy everything that Newport has to offer. Of course, renting the house helps pay the bills, but profit is not our motivation for making Peg-y-Don available for rent. It would be criminal to leave the house empty, as it is there to be enjoyed, and guests will make a welcome contribution to the local economy. As you can probably tell, we love Newport and want to do whatever we can to support the local community.
We have advertised Peg-y-Don on various property portals, alongside this website. The longer term hope is that we will build up an extended Peg-y-Don family (sign up below if you are interested in joining the club) and will stop advertising on the portals. There are some fairly hefty costs involved, so you will ALWAYS get the best price by booking directly and we would rather you saved some £££ on the rental so that you can spend more when in Newport.
It is early days, but all bookings have so far been direct (driven primarily by social media) or via our listing on Airbnb. Short term breaks are very popular, especially on Airbnb, and it has been interesting to see how last minute some holiday planning is, although that is countered by the fact that 2025 bookings are already starting to build and these have been week-long trips, so more indicative of the family holidays that we had expected.
If you read our welcome post, you will know that we put a lot of effort into Peg-y-Don’s refurbishment. We are really happy with the outcome and love staying at the house but I think that it is only natural to feel nervous when first welcoming guests to the house. We want you to enjoy it as much as we do, so waiting for the reviews to come in was a little like waiting for exam results!
I have therefore been thrilled (and relieved!) to read some extremely positive feedback from the first few weeks of guests staying at Peg-y-Don:
It is fantastic to read this feedback and to know that we are not entirely biased in our opinions of Peg-y-Don! It really does make a difference to read such glowing feedback, so thank you to all our lovely guests who have taken the time to share their thoughts.
All in all, we are thrilled with the first two months of Peg-y-Don’s life 🙂 It is getting increasingly difficult for us to find a spare week to go ourselves, so you should check the calendar and book now if you have limited options regarding when you can get away, but it is very rewarding to see that the work we put into the house and the decisions that we made are being appreciated.
We hope you have a fantastic summer and don’t forget to sign up below if you want to be part of the Peg-y-Don family.
